This One Simple Change Will Help You Love Your Work Again

But…maybe you’re NOT happy.

Maybe your work feels empty right now.

Maybe you put in your time at the office (or log in from home) and the money rolls in, but it all feels so…hollow.

And maybe you’re stressed because you feel stuck in a rut…

…and you don’t know how you got there…

…and you don’t know how to get out.

Sound familiar?

Okay then. Let’s chat.

I want to share with you one simple change that will help you love your work again… But first, a story.

My dad told me this story years ago when I was a teenager and I hated yard work. I didn’t like homework either. Come to think of it, “work” of any kind wasn’t my favorite thing…but that’s a topic for another day.

So here’s the story.

>> Two men were digging ditches one day, when a traveler passed by on the road.

>> “What are you doing?” asked the traveler.

>> One man looked up from the dust cloud in his trench and replied with a scowl, “Digging a ditch.”

>> The other looked up from his equally dirty surroundings and responded with a grin, “Building a cathedral.”

What’s the point?

Perspective matters.

If you see what you do each day as just:
• getting more customers,
• and making more money,
• or even “building an empire,”
you WILL get stuck in a rut because those things DO. NOT. MATTER. on their own.

Seriously, they don’t.

You know they don’t because you’ve seen it and felt it yourself, otherwise you probably wouldn’t be reading this post (unless you’re bored, in which case…get back to work.)

But you know what DOES matter?

Legacy.

You see, if you’re reading this, that means you’re human, and if you’re human, that means you’re going to die.

Hopefully not soon, but eventually:
• all the money you’ve made will be in someone else’s hands,
• all the power you’ve accumulated will be transferred elsewhere, and
• all the stuff you’ve bought will be either gathering dust on a shelf or in a garage or rotting in a landfill.

But the lives you make better because of the work you do TODAY…that legacy will continue.

That’s why I believe one simple change to your PERSPECTIVE can help you love your work again, and the change is this:

## Stop seeing your work as just a CAREER to make money, and start seeing it as a CALLING to make a difference in people’s lives. ##

Regardless of WHAT product or service you provide, HOW you do it can make a difference in people’s lives.

Regardless of the PRICE you charge for your offer, the PURPOSE behind why you offer it can make a difference in people’s lives.

And if you can make this one simple change to reframe your career as a calling, THAT will make a difference in your life.

And that kind of difference will help you love your work again.

Why Successful Business Owners Get Divorced (It’s not what you think), AND HOW TO FIX IT.

In my work through the years in both business and ministry, I’ve gotten to KNOW many successful business owners.

I don’t mean we just say hello at parties or send each other cheesy greeting cards at Christmas.

I don’t mean we just have similar interests or do fun things together from time to time.

• I mean I’ve gotten to know them so well that they’ve confided in me.
• They’ve told me their secrets and struggles, their pains and their plans.
• They’ve told me how things are REALLY going at home…

And as I’ve heard many of the stories successful people don’t tell anyone else, I’ve seen the end result of how most of these stories play out, especially when it comes to marriage and divorce.

Do you know what I’ve noticed in all these years of working with people going in to or coming out of divorce?

There’s a common thread, and it’s not what you might think.

• It’s not that one partner slept with their secretary or the other had an affair with a neighbor.
• It’s not financial troubles (like in the majority of divorce cases).
• It’s not even a lack of quality time spent together (“You’re not married to ME, you’re married to your WORK!” <throws glass at head>)

It’s something most people would never expect.

A lack of shared vision.

Think about it: Divorce ultimately occurs because of deep and “insurmountable” DIVISIONS in the relationship. (That is in quotes because I don’t think ANY relationship issue is insurmountable with the right attitude, skills, and habits, but that’s a post for another day.)

And where does division come from? It comes from people having different “visions” for where they want to go.

Without a sense of shared PURPOSE, you and your spouse are almost guaranteed to end up going in two different directions.

You’re making money and building your company…but why?

Sure you say you’re “doing it for the family,” but all that money is doing is providing an exchange of resources, payback for the time and attention you withheld from the relationship.

She or he is doing things at home or in the neighborhood…but why?

Sure they may be improving the house or doing nice things in the community, but what does that accomplish for your relationship together?

BUT… imagine this instead.

Imagine your business had a bigger purpose, and your family did, too.

Imagine you were still traveling on different paths but they were headed up the same mountain, to the same peak.

Would that be totally different! Of course it would! You see…

• Affairs are just a SYMPTOM of relationships that were already divided.
• Money fights are just an OUTCOME of a lack of shared priorities.
• Lack of time together is only a BIG problem if people don’t agree on WHY it’s happening.

So, how do we fix it?

What can we do to STOP the division that is the root cause of divorce and START a better trajectory for our relationship?

Simple: commit to a SHARED vision for our family and our work.

When we’re able to agree on WHY we’re building the company and making the money and upgrading the house and getting involved in the community, everything changes!

There’s a feeling of unity and synergy that comes into play when people are committed to a common purpose.

There’s a greater sense of understanding when sacrifices have to be made, because “we’re all in this together.”

And when people are pursuing a shared vision, they don’t drift farther apart.

They grow closer together.

So, if you want to win at work without losing your marriage, find and commit to a shared vision for your family and your business.

Work together to find something that matters to you both. Then, craft language that captures WHY you’re building your business and your family, WHERE you want to go together, and HOW you want to get there.

When you do, I believe you’ll not only be making an investment in your relationship.

You’ll also be taking concrete steps to build your life on the Pillars of True Success.

7 Ways to Get Your Growth Un-stuck (pt.2)

Have you ever started a project, program or a journey with tons of excitement, only to say “This is NOT what I signed up for…” ??

Maybe you’re just STUCK in Stage 2…

In my “7-Stage Growth Journey,” Stage 1 is the Promise, and Stage 2 is Passion.  

I use passion to refer to things and people we care about and topics and activities that interest us. They are facets of our personality that make us uniquely “us”.

Passion is like an engine that drives us, and if a promise starts the fire, our passion fans the flame.

This is incredibly important because when it comes to personal growth, duty and obligation are NEVER enough to keep us moving forward. We have to actually WANT to make progress, and that usually requires a connection between where we’re GOING and what we LOVE.

For instance, you could promise me that if I download this free eBook or enroll in those courses or attend that event I’ll “Be a Better Cook in 21 Days”…and I wouldn’t care.

Why? Because cooking is not a passion of mine. I like EATING good food but preparing it doesn’t interest me at all.

BUT…imagine if my wife (who is AMAZING in the kitchen, by the way) had a tragic accident and was no longer able to cook. Imagine if I was now the one who held the responsibility of making sure we ate properly.

That would probably make a difference in my desire to want to learn to cook.

It still might not make “kitcheneering” my FAVORITE thing to do, but the opportunity to “Be a Better Cook in 21 Days” would look a WHOLE lot more attractive.

Why? Because while cooking itself isn’t something I have a passion for, I AM passionate about providing for my family and making sure they have everything they need.

My passion for something I LOVE keeps me moving towards the goal that I WANT.

What does this mean for you? It means if you’re stuck in your growth journey, maybe you’re simply trying to grow in the wrong area, or for the wrong reason. 

If you want to really grow yourself or your business, maybe it’s time to get some deeper clarity about who YOU are and what you REALLY want out of life, and start playing to your strengths.

How Grinding Coffee Helps us Grow

Is it true that people who grind their own coffee are 38% more likely to be successful in life???

…I have no idea, but keep reading for how grinding coffee DOES teach us something about personal growth. 😉 

Every morning I grind my coffee fresh.

Well, a machine does it for me, but I get to tell it what to do.

That choice of what grinder setting I select is crucial to my morning cup-o’-joe, because of this obvious but powerful principle, which I simply call “The Grinder Principle.”

|| The longer the grinding, the finer the grind. ||

Of course this obviously assumes the beans are fresh, the grinder blades are sharp and the motor is working properly. Given that these things are in order, though, my choice becomes very simple: how fine of a grind do I want?

Now, notice how the same is true for our growth journey in life.

Whether we want to grow a business, a relationship, a church, or ourselves, we will always have to go through difficult circumstances–the “grinder” of growth– to get the results we want.

Unlike my coffee routine, however, we don’t always get to choose the type or the timing of the grinding we go through.

But there IS one choice we DO have.

Will we run away, or will we lean in?

Our daily decision of how to respond to the grinder of growth will determine the quality of outcome we get., because the longer the grinding, the finer the grind. 

So, may we all choose wisely today, and lean in to the grinding.

7 Ways to Get Your Growth Un-stuck (pt.1)

“So you’re KILLING IT at work, but it’s KILLING YOU inside…?”

In my work through the years with all kinds of people, I can’t tell you how many times that little phrase has summed up EXACTLY why someone feels “stuck” in their life as a whole.

They are seeing all sorts of success in one area (often work-related since that’s where we spent a HUGE amount of our time), but they can’t shake the feeling that something is “off” in their life, like things are out of balance somehow.

That feeling soon becomes frustration, and before long that frustration starts “leaking out” in the form of either lashing out at the people they care about or withdrawing in discouragement.

I’ve found that when people are in that “stuck” state, they may be able to keep “killing it” at work and even put on a good front for their family and friends…most of the time. However, bit by bit that feeling eats away at them, leaving them more and more empty inside.

Ever felt that way?

Maybe you feel that way now?

More often than not, I’ve found that when people get to that place it’s because there’s a HUGE CONFLICT between where they want to GO and how they’re trying to GET there.

Something is their journey is out of alignment with their goal.

Over the next few days I’d like to share with you the “7-Stage Growth Journey” framework I use to help people “retrace their steps” and get un-stuck as quickly as possible.

STAGE 1: The Promise (this is about motivation)

Every journey towards growth starts with the promise of something better.

It might be something we want to GAIN (more money, more love, more freedom) or something we want to avoid LOSING (a job, a relationship, a place in the group).

Either way, just like objects in Newton’s first law of thermodynamics, PEOPLE will not move unless they are compelled by an external force, and the promise of something better can provide that motivation to change.

For some people, they get stuck right at the start because they don’t have a BIG enough or CLEAR enough reason to grow.

The promise is like a spark, and some people just don’t have it.

What does this mean for you? It means if you’re stuck where you are, maybe it’s because you don’t SEE the possibility of anything better, or FEEL like there’s anything wrong with where you are.

If you want to make progress in your personal or business growth, maybe it’s time to seek out some better inspiration.

How to Add Value Without “DOING” Extra Work

There’s a lot of talk these days about “adding value” in business, but have you ever felt that just sounds like more on your plate to get done?

Maybe it doesn’t have to be that way.

The other day I was chatting with a new friend who builds landing pages, but his REAL passion is to be an educator someday. In the course of our conversation, I suggested “Why not do both?”

Here’s what I shared with him, and perhaps it will be helpful for you!

I was just thinking that if your passion is for educating people, I bet you could find a way to work that in to what you do with landing pages.

One thought would be something I do with clients: when I create a solution for them, I ALSO make sure to take the time to explain the “why” behind what I did.

That way they have a deeper understanding of the principles at work and they can apply those principles in other areas.

For instance, if I’m helping a client with sales copy for an ad campaign, I love to go through each part of the copy and explain WHY I chose the phrases and words I did. That way they are getting a deeper understanding of the psychology behind it and they can apply that understanding in their other projects as well!

Or if I am preparing a visual piece for a client, I walk them through WHY I picked each color and photo, and how I came to my decisions on the layout. That way they are getting a deeper understanding of good design which can help them in other areas, too.

Plus, I hope that also demonstrates that I really DO care about their business as a whole, not just the little piece they are paying me to work on.
