God chose you to be established in Him

Scripture Notes on Psalm 87

On the holy mount stands the city He founded; the Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwelling places of Jacob.  (Psalm 87:1-2)

God chose Jerusalem to be the special place He would make His home.  He chose Jerusalem to be a shining example of His love and faithfulness.  He chose Jerusalem to be a blessing to the world, and because He chose her, He gave her a firm and solid foundation of rock.

Now, God has chosen you to be the place He makes His home.  Now He has chosen you to be an example of His love and faithfulness.  Now He has chosen you to be a blessing to the world, and because of this, He has given you a firm and solid foundation on the rock of Jesus Christ.

Rejoice in this today and walk in confidence, because God chose you to be established in Him.

God abounds with love for you

Scripture Notes on Psalm 86

Gladden the soul of your servant, for to you, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.  (Psalm 86:4-5)

Some people see God as a task master, harsh and stern and waiting eagerly to punish those who don’t measure up to His expectations… But that is not the God of the Bible.

Some people see God as a distant deity, one who created but then abandoned the world to its own devices and the whims of chance… But that is not the God of the Bible.

Certainly, God is a righteous judge who has to punish sin. Of course He created laws of nature and human freedom and He usually lets them run their course.

Yet, all throughout Scripture we see a dominant characteristic of the God of the Bible that sets Him apart from all others; His steadfast love.

Now because of Christ, God’s grace holds out an invitation to all who call on Him in faith. It’s a promise that when you are bad, God is good. When you fall into sin, God offers forgiveness. When you are faithless, God is faithful, because Jesus has brought you in to the covenant family and God always keeps His covenants.

No matter where you are in your relationship with God right now, call on Him! You see, God abounds with love for you.

God’s heart is for the helpless

Scripture Notes on Psalm 82

How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked?  Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. (Psalm 82:2-3)

All throughout Scripture, God has harsh words and strong judgments for those in authority who use their power to oppress.  The same is true for those who have the ability to help the needy, but refuse.

This is both a convicting and comforting thing.  Convicting, because this means He also wants you to help the hurting in some way. Comforting because we all go through seasons of hurt.  If not right now, then eventually you will be weak and afflicted, and in that moment take heart.

God is for you, because God’s heart is for the helpless.
