God’s Hope for Your Heart from Mark 8
JESUS IS YOUR CONSISTENT PROVIDER
Now they had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. And He cautioned them, saying, “Watch out; beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.” And they began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread…
[And Jesus said to them] “When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They said to him, “Twelve.” “And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” And they said to him, “Seven.” (Mark 8:14-16, 19-20)
How quickly the minds of the disciples were turned towards earthly things! Jesus had already demonstrated His power and provision in miraculous ways, but somehow, even in the presence of the Master, the material world had such a hold on them that their physical needs superseded their spiritual sight, and their hunger crowded out their memory.
Isn’t it true, though, that we often do the same?
Has Jesus ever stepped in before to meet needs in your life? Has He ever come through for you in a powerful way? Have you discovered that it’s easy to forget?
Here’s the thing. When the reality of what you lack in the present eclipses how Jesus has provided for you in the past, it’s easy to get worried and filled with fear. Don’t go there!
Don’t let your immediate needs block your view of God’s imminent provision. Jesus has promised to provide for you. Don’t let your hunger for other things keep you from seeing the reality of His presence with you right now, and the assurance of His care for you just around the bend.
May you find strength as you remember God’s goodness, and may you never lose sight of this hope-inspiring truth: Jesus is your consistent provider.
