God’s Hope for Your Heart from John 1
JESUS IS THE FIRST WORD OF YOUR LIFE
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1)
In the Bible, words have great meaning, and sometimes the smallest details contain the biggest truths. Sometimes the most insignificant parts point to the most incredible patterns of God’s creativity and how He still works in the world.
For instance, everything starts with a word.
- Creation itself begins as God speaks and it comes to pass.
- Jesus is declared to be the “Word” of God, one with the Father, the carrier of the essence and truth of who God really is.
- John the Baptist begins his ministry with a word, “repent.”
- Jesus begins His teachings with a word, “Truly” or, “Amen.”
- Sin enters the world through a word of doubt, as Satan speaks that fateful phrase, “Did God really say…?”
- And God gives His written word as a witness to the reality of the Living Word, Jesus Christ.
Everything starts with a word.
How many relationships have begun with a word, and how many separations have begun in the same way? How many futures have been ignited with a word of encouragement, and how many possibilities have been destroyed with a word of despair? How many families have waited for word of a loved one sent to war, and how many travelers have started their return with a word of home in their heart?
When the Apostle John writes, “in the beginning was the Word,” he’s not just writing about what was. He’s writing about what is.
Even more importantly, he’s reminding us that where you end up is always tightly linked with where you started, and that the starting place makes all the difference.
That’s why it’s so vital that you remember this: If you’re in Christ, God has already declared the first word in your life. He has already announced the one word that sets the stage for all the others. No matter what words the world tries to attach to you, dwell on this truth and let it fill your heart with hope: Jesus is the first word of your life.
