Bonhoeffer and the Church of Today

Reading “Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy” by Eric Metaxas tunes my imagination to what might happen in my own lifetime.

How quickly and easily the German church was drawn in to appeasement and accommodation with evil.  In a desire for peace and harmony, the people of God “prepared the way” for the lords of war and discord to make their stand. The church should have taken a stand with no fear of righteous conflict, but instead cowed and bowed to Belial.

Of course, it is easy to cast stones from afar at the choices of brothers in different shoes, but oh, that the Church in our time would have no fear of holy conflict!

Dear Lord of Hosts, let us be a people unafraid of aggression where needed, yet unmoving and unrestrained in the offering of free grace for all.
