So you’ve hit some goals? Congratulations! You’re probably riding high and feeling good right now.
BUT, if you’d rather NOT feel successful, I have good news! There are three easy ways to make sure that…
• No matter how many milestones you reach,
• No matter how much money you earn, and
• No matter how many people tell you “great job,”
you never, EVER feel like a True Success.
Here’s the first one.
WAY 1: Work as HARD as you can, not as SMART as you can.
I’ll skip the fluff and get right to the bottom line: “Hustle” will make you burn bright…until you burn OUT. (Wow, that’s tweetable! @phillipgonzales)
When you put in long hours, push-push-push to get ahead, and adopt a “can’t stop, won’t stop” mentality toward building your business WITHOUT considering the long-term effects of that lifestyle, you’re setting yourself up for two massive falls.
First, your BODY isn’t designed to run with 24/7 intensity without necessary rest/recharge cycles. That means if you aren’t investing in leveling-up your rest habits just as much as your work habits, it won’t be long before you’re out of balance.
Second, your MIND isn’t designed to obsess over only one thing 24/7 without both “pressure release valves” to give yourself a break and other interests and inputs to broaden your perspective.
What does this have to do with your feelings of success?
When your body is overworked and under-rested (I call this “The Hustle Trap”) it is unable to produce the chemicals (mostly dopamine) that are literally REQUIRED for you to feel good about what you’re doing.
You’ll keep pushing and pushing but because you haven’t let your body and brain regulate themselves, your enjoyment and satisfaction will slipping lower and lower. (For an excellent overview of the connection between neurochemistry and work, check out “Leaders Eat Last” by Simon Sinek. Or just ask me about it.)
You and I need healthy rhythms and work habits in order both to grow and to ENJOY our growth, but if you want to **guarantee** you never feel successful, work as HARD as you can, not as SMART as you can.
