Last weekend while doing a bit of “summer cleaning,” I realized something very, very important.
Spiders LOVE my garage!
This is very important because I do NOT love spiders, and while I don’t mind a few hanging out up near the ceiling, I’m just not okay with them treating every corner, nook and cranny like it’s their own private vacation home.
So I squished them.
I squished them all, even the little ones.
(Okay fine, I didn’t really squish ALL of the spiders, but I did get a lot, though maybe not literally 87 of them.)
Of course, you’re probably wondering “What in the world does this have to do with life and success??”
I’m glad you asked.
The truth is, I don’t mind the little spiders all that much. In fact, I could barely even see them and it would have been easier to simply let them scurry away, up to a higher corner that I couldn’t reach.
But I know what little spiders do when left unchecked.
They grow.
In fact, if they are allowed to just “do what they do,” little spiders will always grow.
Just like little actions, little attitudes, and little beliefs.
You see, there are dozens, perhaps hundreds of little actions you and I take every day because of the attitudes we’ve chosen to adopt and the beliefs we’ve chosen to embrace, and it’s easy to ignore them, take them for granted, pretend they aren’t there or not see them at all.
But they’ve been there our whole lives.
As children we receive messages from parents and friends and teachers and others around us and those messages tell us who we are.
As young adults we start behaving the way “people like us” are supposed to, because “that’s just what we do.”
Well into adulthood, we hold on to these patterns of belief and behavior because they feel natural, and they are natural for us because they’ve become second-nature to us.
But they don’t have to be.
If you look at your life right now and see patterns that are NOT taking you in the direction you want to go and helping you become the kind of person you want to be, you have a choice.
You can squish the little spiders.
You can set aside time with a pen and paper and make a list of things you feel, ideas you believe, and ways you behave, and choose which ones you want to get rid of and which ones you want to let grow.
Then you can take what you’ve learned and call a friend, meet with a professional, buy a book, subscribe to a podcast or find a course and DIG DEEPER into what you’ve learned.
You can make those little changes that lead to big results over time.
And by taking action… you’ll be taking ownership of your life by making sure it’s built on a foundation of True Success.
