Scripture Notes on Psalm 118
Out of my distress I called on the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me free. The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? (Psalm 118:5-6)
God takes commitment very seriously. He calls all people to be truthful with one another, to honor agreements with each other, and to keep commitments as unto Him.
Yet, we fail again and again. We let fear or selfishness, pride or pain take precedence in our decisions over the commitments we’ve made.
When we do this, though, all we are doing is contributing to our own inner sense of insecurity. After all, if we can’t keep our own commitments to others and ourselves, who can we trust to keep their commitments to us?
We can trust God.
We may fail to uphold our side of agreements, but God never does. We may shirk our responsibilities to those who depend on us, but God never will.
You may not have followed all God commanded you, but if you’ve been born again to be in Christ, here’s good news. God is still with you! He is still for you! No matter what evil comes against you, He will still fight for you!
Stop looking at your fears and foes, and start looking to your Father above. Stop dwelling on your past sins, and focus on your perfect Savior. Let this truth spur you on to greater obedience and faithfulness, and let this reminder give you strength.
God’s commitment is your courage.
