Is it wrong to pray punishment on other people?

“Fill their faces with shame [so] THAT they may seek Your name, O Lord.  Let them be put to shame and dismay forever; let them perish in disgrace, [so] THAT they may know that You alone, whose name is the Lord, are the Most High over all the earth.” -Psalm 83:16-18

When the psalmist prays punishment for the enemies of God’s people, there is surely some element of personal interest, but that’s not the main point.

Godly prayers may indeed seek justice, even punishment for evil, but not out of a personal desire for retribution.  Pray for justice, not to “get back” at your enemies, but to turn their hearts to worship God.

Pray for the sake of His glory, not your revenge.
